Benton, CORL win cross country sectional titles


BENTON — Benton came a whisker away from sweeping the boys and girls individual and team titles at its own cross country sectional Saturday.

Led by 4-time sectional champ Mia McLain’s course record, the Rangerettes won the girls side. Du Quoin, Freeburg, Roxana, and Breese Mater Dei also qualified for next week’s state meet in Peoria.

Ansley Bailey (Massac Co.), Maddie Karcher (Hamilton Co.), Brodie Denny (A-J), Kristen Ess (Breese Central), Ashlee Hirsch (Pinckneyville), Julia O’Neill (Althoff), and Megan Cook (Okawville) all advance as individuals.

On the boys side, Benton’s Reece Johnson edged Carmi-White County’s Ty Barbre by a half second to win the individual title. The Rangers and Christ Our Rock Lutheran tied for the top team spot. The tiebreaker came down to the teams’ sixth runner, and that gave the Silver Stallions the first boys sectional title in school history. Freeburg, Father McGivney, and Steeleville also advanced as teams.

In addition to Barbre, Justin Mumford (Wesclin), Landen Swinney (Du Quoin), Seth Hamerski (Webber), Carlos Ruvalcaba (Roxana), Isaac Sinn (Sparta), and Tony Lakotich (Crab Orchard) all advance as individuals.

In 2A, Glenwood won the Decatur Girls Sectional with Highland, Mt. Zion, Carbondale and Mascoutah all earning trips to state.

Richland County freshman Tatum David won the indivdual title by more than two minutes. David, Colleen Zeibert (Rochester), Rachel Patterson (Waterloo), Summer Chelf (Mt. Vernon), Alyssa Kowalski (Triad), Kylie Haacke (Mattoon), and Grace Spoonhour (Charleston) all advance as individuals.

Centralia’s Brooks Harlan won the boys side, helping the Orphans to a spot at state with the a fifth place team finish. Mascoutah won the team championship, with Glenwood, Triad, and Springfield also finishing in the top five.

Eli Ward (Waterloo), Chris Cherry (Taylorville), Gavin Kirby (Richland County), Matt Herren (Rochester), Tucker Pollard (Carbondale), Jackson McAlister (Waterloo), and Nick Hanratty (Highland) all advance as individuals.
