Late free throws send Anna-Jonesboro to regional championship game

VIENNA — The Anna-Jonesboro Lady Wildcats built a 20-point second half lead, saw that lead vanish, then got two free throws from Kristin Edmonds with 4.7 seconds left to beat Eldorado 38-37 in the Vienna 2A Girls Basketball Regional semifinals.

The Lady Wildcats put on an absolute clinic in the first half, leading 10-0 after one quarter and extending that lead to 23-6 by halftime. A-J pushed the lead to 20 early in the third quarter on Mikayla Bundren’s three-pointer, but Eldorado rallied.

The Lady Eagles scored the final nine points of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 11 heading to the fourth. Eldorado hit 11 of 12 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to fuel the rally. Lilly Mosby’s basket with 7.8 seconds left gave the Lady Eagles their first lead of the game.

Edmonds was fouled bringing the ball into the front court, and calmly sank both free throws. She then came up with a steal to end the game.

Eldorado’s Lexie Mitchell led all scorers with 15. Anna Hess and Raegan Cruse scored nine points apiece to lead A-J.

The Lady Wildcats will face Harrisburg Thursday night at 7:00 for the regional championship.
