Seven wrestlers make it to final day of State Tournament

CHAMPAIGN — Seven wrestlers from the region will compete on the final day of the State Tournament, although none will be battling for a state championship.

Carbondale’s Luke Daly (2A 170) and Mt. Carmel’s Nate Critchfield (1A 170) both lost their semifinal matches Friday night. They both drop into the final four of the consolation side and can finish anywhere from third to sixth.

Five others still need one more win to assure themselves of placing. Mt. Carmel’s Dayton Hall (1A 132), West Frankfort’s Connor Eaton (1A 170), Benton’s Gabe Craig (1A 285), Marion’s Gaige Owens (2A 126), and Carbondale’s Aron Taylor (2A 152) will all compete Saturday morning in the quarterfinal wrestlebacks. A win would clinch no worse than a top six finish.

The quarterfinal wrestlebacks start at 9:00. The semifinal wrestlebacks will be at 11:00, with third and fifth place matches set to start at 1:00 at the State Farm Center.
