Murphysboro upsets Pinckneyville at the buzzer to win regional

MURPHYSBORO — Murphysboro sophomore Calvon Clemons admits he didn’t know why everybody was yelling at him.

Pinckneyville standout Dawson Yates had just hit a three-pointer with 15 seconds left to tie the Murphysboro 2A Regional championship game at 48.

Once Clemons realized the score and the time, he zipped length of the floor and scored the regional winning layup just before time expired giving the Red Devils a 50-48 win over the top-seeded Panthers. Clemons only scored four points on the night.

Murphysboro trailed only once, and that was after the game’s first basket. The Red Devils could not shake the Panthers. Pinckneyville trailed by as many as nine in the third quarter, only to score the final six points to close with 34-31 after three.

The Red Devils had a five point lead in the final two minutes, but couldn’t hold it. Yates’ three tied the game setting up Clemons’ heroics. Yates led all scorers with 24 in his final high school game.

JaQuan Jackson led Murphysboro with 20. Dezmond Clark added 10.

The Red Devils advance to the Hamilton County 2A Sectional where they will meet Mt. Carmel Wednesday night at 7:00.
