GOREVILLE — The Goreville Blackcats were supposed to be playing their 1A State Semifinal against Roanoke-Benson Friday afternoon. Instead, they were on a bus headed home, after the IHSA canceled the remainder of the state tournaments due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.
They were going to have a reception at the high school for the team when they got back. That too was canceled.
So instead, Goreville fans lined the streets to welcome their Blackcats home. The team charter was escorted into town by police and emergency vehicles.
The coaches and players said seeing all the fans welcoming them home helped lift their spirits after not having the chance to fulfill their dreams of playing for a state championship.
