MARION — The Marion Wildcats are celebrating their unofficial third straight girls soccer regional title after shutting out Carbondale 1-0. It’s unofficial because the IHSA is not awarding regional championships in 1A and 2A this year, so it goes down in the books as sectional quarterfinal win.

Ten days after Marion dominated play in an 8-0 road win at Carbondale, the postseason matchup was much different. It was scoreless until sophomore Haylee Lambert blasted a loose ball into the net with 10:46 to play, giving Marion a 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats generated numerous scoring chances trying to add to their lead, but Terriers’ goalkeeper Ella Summerlin always seemed to be in the right place at the right time.

The Wildcats advance to tangle with top-seeded Triad in Troy Tuesday night.
