HARRISBURG — The Century Centurions captured a 1A baseball regional championship, beating Hardin County 9-4 in a game played at Jay Thompson Field in Harrisburg due to the recent wet weather.

The Centurions scored two in the second and two more in the third for a 4-0 lead, but everything changed during an eventful third inning. The Cougars scored three runs with only one ball leaving the infield.

The game was delayed briefly with the score 4-3 when a bank of stadium lights near home plate would not come on. An electrician had to be called to fix the issue.

Once all the lights were on, the Cougars tied the game on a bases loaded walk, but Century starter Lance Smith limited any further damage by striking out Nick Austin and Calen Banks to end the inning.

Smith then tripled and scored the go ahead run in the fifth. The Cougars added three more in the sixth and another in the seventh for a 9-4 lead.

Hardin County did not go quietly, loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Tyler Banks struck out Jake Vaughn to end it, setting off a celebration for the Centurions. Century advances to the sectional to take on Steeleville on the road Wednesday afternoon.
