St. Anthony ends Marissa/Coulterville’s perfect season

JOHNSTON CITY — The Effingham St. Anthony Bulldogs earned a spot in the 1A softball state semifinals with a 4-1 win over previous unbeaten Marissa/Coulterville at the Johnston City 1A Supersectional.

Cameron Rios staked the Bulldogs to a 1-0 lead in the third with an inside the park home run, but the Lady Meteors came back the next half inning to tie the game on Emily Smith’s RBI single.

Alexis Stephens broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, and the Bulldogs added two more in the sixth for the final margin of victory.

St. Anthony will face Arthur/Lovington/Atwood/Hammond at 10:00 Wednesday in a 1A semifinal at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex in Peoria.

Marissa/Coulterville finished the season 16-1.
