CENTRALIA — Hazel Konkel has wreaked havoc at the net for the Nashville Hornettes for the past 4 years, earning all-conference honors multiple times.

Konkel has also excels in the pool.

Last year she won the 100 yard freestyle at the Edwardsville Sectional, but with no state meet, her season was over. Last Saturday at this year’s Edwardsville Sectional, Hazel won both the 50 and the 100 yard freestyle races, and as a result, qualified for this weekend’s state meet in Westmont.

Juggling two sports in the same season can be quite demanding, especially in Konkel’s situation. With no place to practice in Nashville, she must travel a half hour to swim at the Centralia Rec Complex. During the volleyball season, she would swim from 6:00 to 8:00 in the morning, head back to Nashville for school, then after school have volleyball practice or matches at night.

Konkel has been swimming since she was four. She plans to concentrate on volleyball in college, which will make this weekend’s state meet her final swim competition. The state prelims start Friday afternoon at 3:30.
