WHITTINGTON — The Benton Rangers captured the 10-team Battle at the Lake boys golf tournament held at Rend Lake. The event included several teams from the southern half of the state that figure to make some noise in the postseason–teams such as Althoff, Mater Dei, Mattoon, Effingham St. Anthony, and Massac County.

Benton sophomore River Stilley took home medalist honors, after beating Althoff senior Max Bruening on the first hole of sudden death. Stilley and Bruening carded 5-under 67s.

Led by Stilley’s 67, the Rangers had all six of their golfers break 80, with their four counting scores all 75 or better for a total of 287. That was 13 shots better than Althoff and 18 better than St. Anthony. Mattoon and Massac County rounded out the top five team standings.

Benton seniors Cy Norman (72) and Nick Melvin (73) tied for third and fifth individually.
