Harrisburg holds off West Frankfort in SIRR Ohio opener

WEST FRANKFORT — Ross Rider scored the go ahead touchdown with 7:15 to play, and Braden Burtis’ interception with 2:00 to play sealed Harrisburg’s 20-14 win at West Frankfort Saturday afternoon. It was the SIRR Ohio opener for both teams.

Burtis helped set up Rider’s game winning touchdown with a 21-yard run on a fake punt.

The teams traded touchdowns in the first half. Travion Johnson scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to put the Redbirds up 7-0, but Tevin Godsey returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown to tied the game 7-7.

In the second quarter, West Frankfort used some trickery to regain the lead. Gavin Mann, Brady Melvin and Keagan Bowers combined for a double pass that covered 71-yards for a touchdown, giving the Redbirds a 14-7 lead.

In the final minute of the half, Owen Rann connected with Godsey for a 47-yard touchdown pass to tie the game 14-14 at the half. Rider’s touchdown was the lone score in the second half.

Harrisburg improves to 3-1 (1-0). Up next, the Bulldogs will host Massac County Friday night at 7:00. West Frankfort falls to 2-2 (0-1). The Redbirds will travel to Benton Saturday at noon.
