MARION — The Marion Wildcats made Kyle Geiger’s debut as the head baseball coach a victorious one with a 7-3 win over Du Quoin.

For Geiger, the win came against many familiar faces. He was the Indians’ head coach for four seasons before leaving for Marion to replace Marty Manfredo who retired.

Each team scored a run in the first. The Indians regained the lead with a run in the third, but the Wildcats answered with four in the bottom of the inning, three coming home on Chase Niemeyer’s two-out, bases-clearing double.

Du Quoin got one of those runs back in the top of the fifth, and had the tying runs on in both the fifth and sixth innings, but could not move the runners around against Marion reliever Brady Jackson.

The Wildcats then tacked on a couple of insurance tallies in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double from Brody Larson. Larson, who committed to play football at Illinois College Monday, later scored on a wild pitch.

Both teams will be back in action Thursday, weather permitting. Marion (1-0) will host Murphysboro, and Du Quoin will face Mahomet-Seymour.
