CARBONDALE — The Carbondale Terriers improved to 3-1 on the young season with a 3-1 win over Murphysboro on Bleyer Field Monday evening.

The Terriers controlled play in the first half, scoring twice off corner kicks in a 2:43 span. Emma Bickel netted the first in the 10th minute, with Norah Anastasia Pease delivering the second.

Julia Oberg added another first half goal in the 25th minute for a 3-0 lead.

The Red Devils had a couple of scoring chances in the first half, but Averie Summerlin stopped shots from Megan McNitt and Josselin Ariana Mateo.

It remained 3-0 until freshman Olivia Sunny finally got a shot past Summerlin to pull the Red Devils within 3-1 with 13:00 to play. Sunny had another opportunity at the 8:00 mark, but Summerlin was up to the task.

To make matters worse for Murphysboro, McNitt suffered a leg injury late in the contest and had to be helped to the bench. She scored five goals in the Red Devils’ two wins during the opening week.

The Terriers are off until Monday when they will host Poplar Bluff. The Red Devils will be back in action Thursday when they will travel to Highland.
