MURPHYSBORO — After knocking on the door the past couple of seasons, the Murphysboro Red Devils captured the first girls soccer regional championship in school history, by shutting out Waterloo Gibault 2-0 to win their own regional.

Megan McNitt nearly put the Red Devils in front in the final seconds of the first half, but her goal was waved off as it came just after the horn.

The game was still scoreless in the 57th minute when McNitt came up with a steal at midfield, beat the defender with the dribble, then buried a left-footed blast into the back right corner of the net to give Murphysboro a 1-0 lead.

Goalkeeper Bailey Summers and the Red Devils defense held down the fort, then Blevins provided the icing on the cake with an insurance tally in the final 10 seconds.

The Red Devils improve to 19-3-2 on the season. They advance to the Columbia Sectional to face Althoff in the semifinals Tuesday at 5:00.
