WEST FRANKFORT — The West Frankfort Lady Redbirds scored four runs in the first inning and went on to beat Harrisburg 5-2 in quarterfinal action at the West Frankfort 2A Regional.

The bunt was the weapon of choice for West Frankfort in the first. Reese James and Lani Wolfe each had RBI bunt singles for a 2-0 lead. A third run scored on a passed ball. The Lady Redbirds’ fourth run came on a sacrifice bunt by Annabelle Hopkins, as Courtney Russell slid in ahead of the tag after Harrisburg had thrown Hopkins out at first.

The Lady Bulldogs scored their only two run in the top of the fourth on a 2-run single by senior Liza Wiggins, but that was one of only four hits Harrisburg could manage against Hopkins on the day.

West Frankfort added an insurance tally in the fifth as James tripled with two outs, and Russell followed with an bloop RBI single.

The 5th-seeded Lady Redbirds improve to 15-10 and advance to face 4th-seeded Mt. Carmel in the semifinals.
