Centralia outlasts Cahokia in overtime

CENTRALIA — The Centralia Orphans survived a scare at home and beat Cahokia 61-50 in overtime.

The Orphans trailed much of the first half before taking a 21-19 lead into halftime. It was a one point game midway through the third, but Centralia closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 33-25 heading to the fourth.

That lead grew to nine on Tyree Westbrook’s three-pointer early in the fourth, but Antwan Baker shot the Commanches back into it.

Baker hit a trio of three-pointers in the fourth to get Cahokia back within striking distance. Shawn Binford’s conventional three-point play with 19 seconds left tied the game at 47.

Centralia hit three of four free throws to lead 50-47, but Jimeque Harvey hit a buzzer beating three from the corner to send the game into overtime.

The Orphans dominated the extra session, holding the Commanches scoreless. Centralia went 9-9 from the line in OT, and with Preston Johannes accounting for the other two points with a driving layup for the only field goal in the extra period.

Johannes led all scorers with 23. Jamie Long added 12, Crue Walker 11, and Westbrook 10 for the Orphans, who improved to 3-0 in South 7 play.
