Eaton picks up history-making win at Murdale


CARBONDALE — The 59th Annual Murdale Wrestling Tournament opened with a record-setting opening day.

West Frankfort is one of the 22 teams competing. Redbird senior Connor Eaton pinned Mt. Vernon’s Brendan Kelly in his opening match for his 145th career win, which is a new school record. Eaton won a second match by pin later and advanced to the championship round.

The Marion Wildcats qualified eight for the championship round. The Wildcats are in second place after one day, seven and a half points behind Glenwood.

The Benton Rangers qualified seven for the championship round, including heavyweight Gabe Craig who was dominant in two wins by pin. The Rangers are tied with Mascoutah for third.

The host Terriers also qualified eight for the championship round. They are fifth as a team.

The wrestling continues Saturday morning starting at 9:00. The championship matches are expected to start by the early afternoon.
