Sesser-Valier uses big 4th quarter to get by Meridian


BENTON — Peyton Bates scored 11 of his 18 in the fourth quarter to help lead Sesser-Valier to a 58-49 win over Meridian in the final game of the second session at the Benton Invitational Tournament.

The Bobcats led 38-37 late in the third, but Gavin Woodland’s buzzer-beating putback gave the Red Devils the lead heading to the fourth.

S-V outscored Meridian 19-11 in the final quarter for the nine-point win.

Meridian’s Roderick Gatewood, Junior led all scorers with 25 points. Jaylen Easley added 10.

In addition to Bates’ 18 points, Garrett Gunter added 16 and Woodland 11.

Earlier in the night, Benton beat Vandalia 62-49, and Pinckneyville took care of Hamilton County 59-24.

The tournament will resume Friday night.
