Herrin survives OT regional opener against Waterloo

MARION — Brandon Anthony scored nine of his game 24 points in overtime to lead Herrin past Waterloo 66-57 in the Marion 3A Regional.

Herrin nearly didn’t get to overtime.

The Tigers built a 49-42 lead, but watched Waterloo promptly go on a 12-2 run to take a 54-51 lead with less than a minute to play.

Anthony’s driving layup cut it to 54-53. After Waterloo split a pair of free throws, Anthony attacked again, but this time it did not fall. Luke LeQuatte was there for the putback to tie the game and force overtime.

OT was all Herrin, as the Tigers held the Bulldogs without a free throw and outscored Waterloo 11-2 for the win.

The Tigers advance to meet top-seeded Mt. Vernon Tuesday night at 7:00.
