Murphysboro falls to Mater Dei at Supersectional

CARBONDALE — The Murphysboro Red Devils saw their season end one win from a trip to state, losing to Breese Mater Dei 46-26 at the SIU 2A Supersectional.

A nearly 13 minute scoring drought over the end of the second quarter and the entire third quarter was too much for the Red Devils to overcome. Mater Dei jummped out to a 7-0 lead, but Murphysboro rallied to pull within 14-12 after one quarter.

The Red Devils tied the game at 16 midway through the second, but then didn’t score again until the fourth quarter. The Knights scored the final six points of the first half, then put up 16 unanswered points in the third to blow it open.

Mitchell Haake posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead Mater Dei. Caleb Zurliene added 12 and Jacob Schadegg 10. Calvon Clemons led the Red Devils with eight.

Murphysboro finishes 27-8. Mater Dei advances to the 2A State Semifinals where the Knights will face three-time defending champion Chicago Orr at 5:30 Friday in Peoria.
