CARTERVILLE — With the IHSA volleyball season moved to the spring due to the pandemic, many area high school volleyball players have found a new place to play–outside on the sand courts at SI Bowl in Carterville.

A nine-team league consisting of high school and club teams is playing a five-week season. It gives players a chance to work on their skills in this unexpected offseason.

Playing in sand provides a whole new element, which could pay dividends when the players get back on the regular courts. Several players pointed out the physical benefits of the difficulty of playing in sand plus the increased level of communication needed to be successful.

The players said being able to compete and spend time with their teammates was a major plus as well.

The league will continue through September.

SI Bowl will be hosting a high school co-ed volleyball tournament September 19th. Team names must be 80s song titles. For more information, click here.
