BENTON — The Mr. A Classic co-ed cross country meet held in Benton is named for popular retired Logan Elementary School principal Gene Alexander. Alexander is known across the region and beyond for painting maps of the United States on playgrounds.

While not a masterpiece, the host Rangers and Rangerettes weren’t playing around sweeping the Classic. The girls’ side figured to be quite a battle between Benton, who won the SIRR–Ohio Preview last week, and Du Quoin, who did the same on the Mississippi side.

And it was.

Du Quoin’s Olivia Phillips earned medalist honors with a time of 19:40, good enough for a 34 second win. Benton then took five of the next eight spots as the Rangerettes edged the Lady Indians for the team title.

On the boys’ side, Benton freshman Gavin Genisio continued his fantastic start winning by 28 seconds. The Rangerettes took four of the top five and five of the top eight spots to take the team title.
