MT. VERNON — On a day that saw their number three golfer get disqualified and their number two golfer struggle, the Benton Rangers still won the Mt. Vernon 2A Boys Golf Regional by eight strokes, thanks in part to a dominant performance by sophomore Cy Norman.

Norman took home individual medalist honors by eight strokes with a 5-under 66. Norman’s bogey-free round was incredibly close to going even lower, as he missed birdie putts by a whisker on at least three different holes.

Norman wasn’t alone, as the Rangers’ depth took care of the rest. Number five Andrew Bell finished third overall with a 77. Number four Luke Melvin carded an 81 to finish ninth with number six Keaton House shooting an 83 to finish 14th. The Rangers finished with a total of 307 to win the regional title and advance to next week’s Centralia Sectional.

The Carbondale Terriers finished second and also are advancing as a team. Ian Davis’ 3-over 74 led the Terriers attack. Owen Thomas finished fourth with a 79. Alex Baughman and Zach Sanders tied for ninth with 81s.

The four additional individuals advancing include Herrin’s Logan Baggett (79), Marion’s Hayden Burns (79), along with Harrisburg teammates Andrew Bittle (79), and Grant Wilson (80).
