SALEM — Not even a cold front moving through mid-round bringing gusty winds the rest of the day could slow down the Mt. Carmel Lady Aces, as they won their second straight girls golf sectional championship, capturing the Salem 1A Sectional title Monday.

Led by super sophomores Lillian Gottman and Madelyn Young, Mt. Carmel posted a scored of 312 to win the title by nine shots over Effingham St. Anthony. Massac County was third, 23 shots back.

Despite the conditions, Gottman finished with a 2-under 71 to claim medalist honors. Marquette’s Gracie Piar had a chance to force a playoff with Gottman, but her par putt on 18 just slid by the cup. Young, who was four under on the front nine, carded a 1-over 74 to finish third.

With the postseason shortened due to the pandemic, there will be no return trip to the state tournament for the Lady Aces, as the season is scheduled to conclude with sectionals. Mt. Carmel finished second a year ago.

Defending sectional medalist Kylee Vaughan from Hamilton County finished sixth with a 78. Salem’s Kenzie Anderson and Mt. Carmel’s Daisy Schrader tied for 10th with 81s.
