MARION — Boys soccer was one of three sports to get moved from fall to spring because pandemic rules put place. Marion welcomed Murphysboro for the two teams’ season opener, the first match for either team in more than 500 days.

Both teams are still in search of their first goal in more than 500 days as the opener ended in a scoreless tie.

Each team had multiple scoring opportunities but were unable to capitalize. The Wildcats had two of the day’s best chances. Midway throught the second half, Murphysboro goal keeper Jett Hayes got just enough of Dresden Bell’s laser to guide it over the cross bar. Then with 13:30 minutes to play, Marion freshman Daniel Hernandez had a chance, but hit the post.

Both teams will be back in action Thursday. Marion will travel to Pinckneyville. The Red Devils will welcome Salem for their home opener.
