BENTON — It took a few extra months due to the pandemic, but the Benton Rangers finally had a chance to show off renovated Tabor Field, fresh with new turf and scoreboard, among many other improvements.

The Rangers then went out and looked as sharp as their stadium, shutting out Franklin County rival West Frankfort 53-0 in the season opener for both teams.

Rangers’ junior quarterback Keegan Glover completed 14 of 19 passes for a school record 398 yards and six touchdowns. Glover threw three first quarter TDs, two of those went to Ayden Newcomb, the other to Wyatt McClintock.

Paxton Griffith intercepted Glover early in the second to set up the Redbirds’ best scoring chance, but the Rangers’ defense came up with a fourth down stop inside the 10.

After another Redbirds’ possession ended in Benton territory, Glover marched his team down the field, finding Reid Baumgarte for a 22-yard touchdown to give the Rangers a 28-0 lead at intermission.

Benton (1-0, 1-0) will travel to Harrisburg next Saturday. West Frankfort (0-1, 0-1) will welcome Murphysboro for their home opener next Saturday.
