MARION — It has been a struggle for Waltonville/Sesser-Valier to get any baseball games in this spring. Due to rainouts and re-scheduling difficulties, the Spartans entered Tuesday having only played two games.

WSV doubled its games played by taking on Fairfield and Midland Trail Conference foe Woodlawn at Rent One Park. The Spartans picked up a pair of wins in the process, doubling up the Mules 8-4 and the same of the Cardinals, 4-2.

In the nightcap, a pair of uncharacteristic Woodlawn defensive miscues led to all four Spartans’ runs, all with two outs. A dropped infield pop up allowed one run to score. A dropped fly ball allowed two more to score. Then Mike Emery capped the WSV inning with an RBI single for a 4-0 lead.

Woodlawn tallied two in the fifth, scoring runs on a wild pitch and RBI ground out. The Cardinals then had the tying runs on first and third in the sixth, but could not cut into the deficit.

Blake Chelf set Woodlawn down in order in the seventh to secure the win for WSV. The Spartans improve to 3-1 on the season. The Cardinals fall to 7-4.
