CARBONDALE — The Goreville Blackcats will play for a 1A baseball sectional championship Friday, after beating Woodlawn 8-1 Wednesday in the sectional semifinals.

The Cardinals jumped on top with a run in the first, but Goreville answered by scoring five times in the bottom of the first. The Blackcats took advantage of numerous Cardinals’ mistakes in the field. Goreville scored a run on a wild pitch, another on a fielding error, and a third on a throwing error.

Woodlawn committed five errors on the day.

Blackcats’ junior Dylan Compton allowed only that first inning run over six innings of work. Drake Moss took care of the final inning for Goreville, who will now play at Steeleville Friday at 4:30 for a sectional title and a spot in Monday’s SIU Supersectional.

The Cardinals finished the season 18-9.
