Carbondale blanks Mt. Vernon in South 7 opener

CARBONDALE — The Carbondale Terriers opened South 7 conference play with a 3-0 shutout of Mt. Vernon Tuesday at the Fralish Soccer Complex in Carbondale.

Montadhar Nasser broke up a scoreless battle with :36 left in the half when he beat Rams’ goalkeeper Tyler Olsen with a quick left boot off a set up from Ezra Robinson.

Aziz Alhashil and Nate Torres each added goals in the final 14 minutes to give the Terriers some additional breathing room.

Carbondale improves to 2-2 (1-0). The Terriers will travel to the Cape Notre Dame Soccerfest Thursday. Mt. Vernon falls to 1-3 (0-1). The Rams are off until Saturday when they will host Teutopolis.
