MURPHYSBORO — After being limited to smaller meets of no more than 50 runners last fall due to Covid protocols, Wednesday’s 30-team, Murphysboro Invitational featuring more than 300 runners was a welcomed return to the cross country schedule.

Pope County sophomore Ahryauna Comer dominated the girls varsity race, finishing with a time of 19:20, which was 1:09 faster than Anna-Jonesboro’s Brodie Denny.

Carbondale senior Alex Partlow took care of business in the boys varsity race, finishing with a time of 15:20, which was :38 faster than Benton’s Gavin Genisio.

Pinckneyville placed five runners between 12th and 17th to win the girls team title. Marion had five finish in the top 20 to beat Benton for the boys team title.

Du Quoin was unable to compete after the school put all sports programs on pause earlier in the day.
