CARBONDALE — After a year hiatus due to Covid, the Murdale Wrestling Tournament returned to Carbondale Community High School. 24 teams and more than 250 wrestlers competed this year.

Area wrestlers fared quite well, making the finals or winning all but two of the weight classes.

Three won their weight classes by recording pins in all five of their matches: Marion teammates Nate Dampier (152) and Kanye Gunn (285) as well Mt. Vernon’s Jared Shafer (182).

Harrisburg’s Tony Keene (113) and Anna-Jonesboro’s Caleb Mays (145) won all five of their matches and did not give up a single point.

Benton’s Mason Tieffel (132) moved up a class and still came away with the title.

Murphysboro senior Arojae Hart (138) was named the Tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler. Hart finished with three falls, a a major decision, and a technical fall in the championship.

Despite not winning a single individual championship, Cahokia won the team title with Murphysboro, Quincy (Sr), Carbondale, and Anna-Jonesboro rounding out the top five. Fairfield, Marion, Mt. Vernon, West Frankfort and Benton held down 6-10.
