ANNA — The Carterville Lady Lions used a combination of great defense, timely three-point shooting, and stellar free throw shooting to turn back Du Quoin 48-41 to win the Anna-Jonesboro 2A Girls Basketball Regional.

The Lady Indians led 23-20 at the half, but Carterville senior Macey Lentz turned a pair of steals into layups helping the Lady Lions take a 30-29 lead after three quarters.

Early in the fourth, another Carterville senior, Kristin Edmonds, buried back to back three-pointers. That was part of an 8-0 Lady Lions run to turn a one-point lead into a 40-31 cushion.

Du Quoin seniors Lauren Heape and Abbi Mocaby tried to rally the Lady Indians. They combined for seven points late helping Du Quoin close within four at 42-38. Heape led Du Quoin with 14 points.

That’s as close as the Lady Indians would get as Alecia Doyle went 8-8 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to seal it. Doyle finished the night 11-11 from the line on her way to a game high 19 points. Her sister Amayah added 12.

Carterville advances to the next week’s Nashville 2A Sectional. The Lady Lions will face the winner of the Breese Central Regional Tuesday night at 6:00. Breese Central and Nashville will play for that regional title Friday night.
