CARBONDALE — The Steeleville Warriors are headed to the State Semifinals for the first time after taking care of Macon Meridian 68-47 to win the SIU 1A Supersectional.

Zach Mevert led four Warriors in double figures with 16 points. Reid Harriss an Jacoby Gross each tallied 12, and Lane Lazenby added 10.

Steeleville took control 11-2 first quarter run after the Hawks had taken their only lead of the game, 5-4 on a three-pointer by Grant Meisenhelter. The Warriors led 20-12 after one quarter. Harriss’ six points late in the half helped Steeleville push the lead to 30-19 by intermission.

The Warriors extended their lead to 19, but the Hawks went to a full-court press with some success. An 8-0 Meridian run to close the third drew the Hawks within 11 at 42-31. But that’s as close as Meridian would get, as Steeleville pulled away in the fourth quarter for the 21-point win to improve to 29-6 on the season.

Now the Warriors will head to Champaign, where they will face Duke recruit Jaden Schutt and Yorkville Christian in the semifinals Thursday morning at 10:00. The Mustangs have won their six postseason games by an average 44 points, with the smallest margin of victory being 34.
