CARTERVILLE — After more than four years of struggling with their soccer field at Cannon Park, the Carterville/Herrin Lions have a new home field–the newly resurfaced turf at Lions Stadium.

Despite not being able to practice on the turf yet, the Lions played to a 1-1 tie with Murphysboro in a matchup of the expected top two teams in the Southern Illinois River to River Conference.

Murphysboro freshman Genoa McCarroll scored the first goal in the Lions’ new home, finding the net five minutes in off a free kick from Annie Decker.

Carterville/Herrin tied it up five minutes later when Audri Strothmann scored off the post following a nice feed from Hillary Siemer.

After the first 10 minutes, the defenses took over with each team having only two quality scoring chances the rest of the way. Neither goalkeeper, Murphysboro’s Bailey Summers nor Carterville/Herrin’s Sydney Stuck saw a lot of action, but each made second half saves to keep it 1-1.

With the result, Murphysboro is now 3-3-1. Carterville is now 3-0-1. Up next, both teams will be on the road Tuesday as as the Red Devils will head to Anna-Jonesboro/Cobden, while Carterville will travel to Massac County.
