CHARLESTON — Despite a day challenged by the weather, Pope County sophomore Ahry Comer and Carbondale junior Madyson Swope each won event state titles and brought home multiple medals from the State Track and Field Championships in Charleston Saturday.

After finishing second earlier in the day in the 1A 3200, Comer used a strong kick down the stretch to win the 800. She admitted having “noodles for legs” late in the 1600 and finished ninth in her third final of the day.

Swope and Marion’s Maryiah Menicucci medalled in both the shot put and the discus. Swope and Menicucci finished 2-3 in the shot. Menicucci finished 8th in the discus, and Swope, on the strength of her final throw of 39.92 meters won the 2A discus by a tenth of a meter, or less than four inches. Sparta’s Kayla Braun took second in the 1A shot put.

Several athletes joined Comer, Swope, and Menicucci as multiple medal winners. Du Quoin senior Grace Alongi was third in the 1A 400 and ran legs in the Lady Indians’ 4×800 (3rd) and 4×400 (2nd) relays. Fellow Lady Indians’ senior Olivia Phillips was fifth in the 800, and like Alongi, ran legs in the two relays. Nashville senior Halle Rueter finished 8th in the 1A 100 and ran legs in the Hornettes’ 4×100 and 4×200 that both finished third.
