GOREVILLE — Josie Wettig tossed a four-hit shutout while striking out 11, and Taylor Cottom drove in the game’s only run as Trico beat Goreville 1-0 for the Goreville 1A Softball Sectional championship.

Wettig was sensational in the circle for Trico, but Goreville’s Reese Ray matched her pitch for pitch, also finishing with a four-hitter.

The difference came in the bottom of the fourth when Alyssa Bastien took an extra base when her single bounced away from the outfielder briefly. Cottom followed with a base hit back up the middle scoring Bastien for what turned out to be the game’s only run.

Goreville threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but Wettig got out of trouble with a pair of strikeouts to end the threat.

In the seventh, Madi Rathert’s diving grab of Addi Harris’ blooper kept the Lady Blackcats from putting the tying run on base. Wettig then picked up her 11th strikeout of the night and got Abby King to fly out to Haley Kranawetter to end the game, sparking a celebration.

The Pioneers advance to Monday’s Johnston City 1A Supersectional against either Casey-Westfield or Windsor/Stew-Stras. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00.
