DU QUOIN — On a night when Du Quoin celebrated its 1992 3A State Championship team, the school celebrated one of its all-time great players, retiring the number 12 jersey of Jason Karnes.
Karnes becomes only the fourth Indian football player to have his jersey retired, joining Don Stanhouse, Stan Clary, and Nick Hill.
Karnes was a four-time all-conference pick–in 1992. He earned the honors as quarterback, safety, punter and kicker. His senior season, Karnes completed 65.5% of his passes for 1129 yards with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. He rushed for 570 yards, made 43 consecutive extra points, averaged 38.8 yards per punt, and intercepted six passes, including two in the state title game.
Karnes admitted the night was bittersweet. He said it was humbling, but also tough not being able to share it with his son Chance, who was killed in a car accident in May.
