MURPHYSBORO — The state-ranked Althoff Crusaders exploded for six second half goals to beat the host Red Devils 7-0 and capture the Murphysboro 1A Boys Soccer Regional championship.

The Crusaders carried play throughout the match, spending the majority of the day on Murphysboro’s side of the field. The Red Devils’ defense was stout in the first half, as goal keeper Keyshaun Wills and company limited the damage to trail 1-0 at the half.

Wills made another big save early in the second, but the Crusaders finally broke through, and with injuries piling up, the dam seemed to bust for the Red Devils. Althoff scored six times in the final 33 minutes to claim the regional title.

Althoff improves to 23-1 on the season. The Crusaders advance to their own sectional, where they will play Breese Mater Dei in the semifinals Tuesday at 7:00.

Murphysboro finishes 18-4-1, as the Red Devils set a school record for wins and won the first boys soccer conference title in school history.
