Murphysboro’s season ends at Sacred Heart Griffin

SPRINGFIELD — Fresh off a come from behind win in the second round at previously unbeaten Macomb, the Murphysboro Red Devils knew the challenge awaiting in the quarterfinals was a bit different. The Red Devils found themselves back on the road facing another unbeaten team, this time it was perennial state power Sacred Heart Griffin.

The Cyclones took the opening kickoff back for a touchdown and never looked back, sprinting out to a 28-0 lead after one quarter and cruising to a 51-13 win.

Red Devils standout senior running back Devon Clemons wrapped up his career with 118 total yards (rushing and receiving) with a touchdown. Drew Caldwell connected with Kevin Hale for Murphysboro’s other score.

The Red Devils finish the season 9-3, ending with the school’s third trip to the state football quarterfinals. The 12-0 Cyclones will be back home Friday night to face conference foe Rochester in the semifinals. The Rockets beat Carterville 41-28 in the other south 4A quarterfinal.
