CARTERVILLE — The Carterville Lions took over sole possession of first place in the SIRR Mississippi with a 54-46 win over Pinckneyville Friday night in a match up of conference unbeatens.

This night was about more than a game for Carterville head coach Shane Hawkins, and his son, senior guard Caden Hawkins.

It’s been a tough start to the new year for the Hawkins, with the passing of Shane’s dad and Caden’s grandpa, Tom, December 30. The Lions’ first game since came against Shane’s alma mater, Pinckneyville–a place Tom coached for years.

Hawkins scored a game high 36 as Carterville rallied from 11 points down in the third quarter to win. The Lions improve to 11-4 (4-0).

Kellen Scott led Pinckneyville with 17 points. AJ Keith added 11 for the Panthers who fall to 13-3 (3-1).
