Salem in striking distance heading to final day at State Bowling

O’FALLON — Led by senior Charlie Hunter, the Salem Wildcats are fifth after day one at the Boys State Bowling Tournament being held at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon. The Wildcats are 106 pins behind opening round leader O’Fallon.

Hunter is second individually with 1405 pins, 26 behind Braden Schuld from Machesney Park (Harlem).

O’Fallon totaled 6412 pins to hold a seven pin lead over Rockton (Hononegah). Mascoutah is third 29 pins back, with Lincoln-Way West and Salem rounding out the top five.

The top 12 teams and the top 30 individuals not on the top 12 teams advance to Saturday’s final round. Harrisburg finished 19th as a team and did not advance, but senior Evan McDermott is advancing as an individual. McDermott knocked down 1250 pins and is 41st overall.

Carterville sophomore Evan Flath is the only other area bowler to advance. Flath totaled 1208 pins and is 65th overall.

The final round will get underway at 9:00 Saturday morning.
