Gatewood Junior’s monster night ends with school record

MOUNDS — Meridian’s Roderic Gatewood Jr. tied a career high by hitting nine 3-pointers and poured in 46 points Friday night to lead the Bobcats past Agape Christian 100-83 in a showdown for first place in the South Egyptian Conference.

In the process, Gatewood, Junior passed Jerry “JJ” Strickland to become the school’s all-time leading scorer. Strickland was on hand to see his record of 2062 points broken, and presented Gatewood Jr. the game ball.

Gatewood Jr. now has 2065 career points. Meridian will close the regular season next Friday against Shawnee before opening postseason play at the Goreville Regional.
