Nashville High School Trailblazer Helen Dude

Nashville Play by Play announcer Trey Meyer sat down with 8 different coaches, players and athletic directors at Nashville who gave their input on the impact of Helen Dude, who passed away on Monday, September 25th. Coach Dude was the one credited with giving the girl’s sports programs at Nashville, “The Hornettes”, back in 1975. She was one of the first coaches in multiple sports over at the High School when the programs were established. Nashville has had a rich tradition in girl’s sports since then. The Girl’s Golf team has won 5 state trophies, including a state title in 2013. The Volleyball team has made state 2 times, including a 4th place finish in 2018. The Basketball team has gotten 7 state trophies, including a state title in 2012-13. The Softball team has gotten 6 state trophies, including 3 1st place finishes in 2001, 2012 and 2015. The Track and Field Team has also gotten 2 1st place finishes from the 400-meter relay team and the 800-meter relay team in 2021. She was a huge sports fan of all Nashville Sports, specifically the girl’s sports. She taught PE and Health at the high school for 25 years and retired in 1991. She coached girl’s track for 2 years, softball for 8 years, volleyball for 1 year and basketball for 3 years. We sat down with Wayne Harre, Amber Winchester, Don Hawkins, Wendy Bergmann, Shaun Renth, Sue Pries, Dave Fischer and Reena Peppenhorst as they gave personal experience and stories about Coach Dude and her impact to the high school, the girl’s sports programs and to the community.
