VANDALIA — The Carterville Lady Lions came up just a little bit short in their bid to earn a second trip in three years to the Girls 2A State Basketball Semifinals, falling to Pana 64-56 at the Vandalia Supersectional.

Sporting a 30-game winning streak and supported by large contingent of fans that made the half hour trip from Pana to Vandalia, the Lady Panthers led 11-9 after one quarter and extended that lead to nine points by halftime, 28-19. The lead grew even more in the third quarter, before the Lady Lions rallied.

Carterville erased a 13-point deficit, tying the game at 45-45 on a three-point play from senior Alecia Doyle. The Southeast Missouri State signee and her younger sister, Amayah, combined for 46 points to keep their team in it. The Lady Lions though could never get over the hump and take the lead in the fourth quarter, as Pana answered with a 16-6 run to regain control and then cruised to the win.

Amayah Doyle led all scorers with 25 points. Alecia Doyle added 21 points for Carterville, who finishes 27-7. Jillian Hamilton led four Lady Panthers in double figures with 21. Anna Beyers added 13, Rachel Holthaus 12, and Lainey Hicks 10. Pana improves to 35-1 and will face Quincy Notre Dame in the first 2A semifinal at 2:30 Thursday at Redbird Arena in Normal.
