Nathaniel Marlow – Webber Trojans

When you talk about the best players to ever come through the WMIX Sports Basketball Showcase, the name Nathaniel Marlow will forever be part of that conversation.

A four-year varsity starter, Marlow didn’t just have a great season—he built one of the most decorated and consistent careers Southern Illinois has ever seen, combining longevity, production, and big-game performances at every stage of his high school journey.

From the very beginning, Marlow made an impact.

As a freshman, he earned First Team All-Conference honors while helping lead Webber to a 21-12 record, a Regional Championship win over Sesser-Valier (52-49), and a trip to the Sectional Championship Game, where the Trojans fell in a hard-fought 74-69 battle against Meridian at Gallatin County in head coach Brad Beaty’s final game.

The success continued into his sophomore season, where Webber posted a 31-4 record in Coach Jaxon Helm’s first year. The Trojans captured the Altamont Regional title, defeating the host Indians 57-45, before falling to Arcola in the sectional semifinal at Effingham (St. Anthony). That season marked the beginning of Marlow’s run as Midland Trail Conference Player of the Year, an honor he would claim three consecutive seasons.

As a junior, Marlow and the Trojans went 27-5, winning a regional championship over Christ Our Rock Lutheran (80-60) on their home floor. Their season ended in the Red Hill Sectional Semifinal against Effingham (St. Anthony), but Marlow’s individual dominance continued to grow—earning Second Team IBCA All-State honors for the second straight year.

Then came a senior season that solidified his place among the all-time greats.

Marlow delivered one unforgettable performance after another, including a historic night on February 11 against Edwards County. In an 84-51 win, he surpassed the 3,000 career point milestone by drilling a deep three-pointer from just inside the volleyball line—becoming just the 7th male player in IHSA history to reach that mark. He finished the night with an incredible 51 points, putting an exclamation point on one of the most memorable individual performances in area history.

He followed that up by closing the regular season with 46 points on the road at Nashville, a team that would go on to win a Class 2A Regional Championship—proving his ability to dominate against top-tier competition.

In the postseason, Marlow elevated his game even further.

He scored 39 points in a Regional Semifinal win over Wayne City, then followed it with 41 points in the Regional Championship against Altamont, doing everything he could to lead Webber back to another title. The Trojans finished 26-7 in his senior season, falling in a competitive 68-58 contest to the Indians.

By the end of his career, Marlow had compiled an astounding 3,272 points, finishing second all-time in IHSA (boys) history, just 86 points shy of the legendary Charles “Chico” Vaughn from Tamms.

His list of accolades is just as impressive.

Marlow was named First Team IBCA All-State as a senior, becoming one of just three Jefferson County players to earn the honor this season—joining Waltonville’s Gage Peterson and Woodlawn’s Kyle Cooper. He was also a two-time Second Team All-State selection as a sophomore and junior, a four-time All-Conference First Team selection, and a three-time Midland Trail Conference Player of the Year.

Add in numerous All-South, statewide, and media honors, and it’s clear his impact reached far beyond Bluford, Jefferson County, and even southern Illinois.

But what truly separates Nathaniel Marlow is how he delivered—night after night, year after year. Whether it was a regular season showdown or a postseason battle, Marlow consistently rose to the occasion. His career wasn’t just impressive—it was historic.
