Goreville takes care of business to win Invitational title

GOREVILLE — The Goreville Blackcats captured their own Invitational Tournament title with a 47-35 win over Benton Saturday night.

Both teams came into the game with perfect 4-0 records in the tourney.

After piling up the points earlier in the week, the Blackcats showed they could win a different way in the title tilt, winning a defensive scrum. After being tied 9-9 after one quarter, Goreville closed the second on a 9-2 run to lead 18-14 at the half.

The Blackcats’ lead was two in the final minute of the third until Luke Brown hit a pull up jumper then buried a deep three in the closing seconds for a 30-23 lead heading to the fourth.

Trent Glidewell led the charge for Goreville with 15. His three-point play early in the fourth pushed the lead to double digits.

Goreville’s Nick Compton was named tournament MVP.
