Late free throws lead Woodlawn to MTC Tourney title


WAYNE CITY — Race Rynski hit two free throws with 8.2 seconds left to give Woodlawn a 55-53 win over Wayne City for the Midland Trail Conference Tournament championship.

Wayne City had a final chance to tie, but Taj McKinney’s jumper at the buzzer was short.

The Cardinals built a 12-point second quarter lead only to watch Wayne City cut the deficit to 34-30 by the half. The Indians kept rolling in the third. All told, it was a 21-2 Indians’ run to put them on top 43-36. It was 45-40 after three.

Wayne City extended that lead to nine at 49-40 in the fourth, but then it was the Cardinals’ turn to rally. Woodlawn closed the game by scoring 15 of the final 19 points, with Rynski scoring eight of his team high 17 points in the fourth quarter.

Jackson Tiemann added 16 for Woodlawn. Tournament MVP Blake McKay finished with 11.

Wayne City’s Kaiden Taylor led all scorers with 20. Marcus Durham chipped in 12.
