METROPOLIS — The Massac County Patriots used a huge fourth quarter to beat Murphysboro 45-39 in a River to River-Ohio match up Friday night.

Zach Travis scored ten of his game high 16 points, and teammate Julian Russell added seven of his ten in the fourth quarter as the Patriots outscored Murphysboro 22-11 to complete the season sweep of the Red Devils. The Patriots also defeated the Red Devils 63-60 in Murphysboro back in December.

Both teams are 4-2 in the conference, tied for second place, a game behind Herrin.

The Red Devils got off to a great start, scoring the game’s first eight points. They led 8-4 after one quarter. Dezmond Clark scored nine of Murphysboro’s 20 points in the first half to give the Red Devils a five-point lead at halftime.

Murphysboro maintained that five-point advantage, leading 28-23 after three quarters before the Patriots dominated the fourth quarter. Massac County hit four three-pointers in the fourth quarter–two from Travis, one from Russell and another from Tragen Keyes to key the rally.

Calvon Clemons was the only Red Devils to reach double figures. He finished with 10.

Both teams are back in action with non-conference home games Tuesday. Massac County will host McCracken County. Murphysboro will host Eldorado before welcoming first place Herrin next Friday.

The Murphysboro Red Devils prepare to attack the Massac County defense in the second quarter.
Massac County’s student section–The Red, White, and Blue Crew–went for the “White Out” theme.
