McKay’s monster day leads Woodlawn past Goreville

WOODLAWN — It’s been quite an eight day stretch for Woodlawn senior Blake McKay. Last Saturday, he was named MVP after the Cardinals beat Wayne City to win the Midland Trail Conference tournament.

Tuesday, McKay surpassed 2000 career points in the Cardinals’ win over Grayville.

Saturday, McKay scored 18 of his 37 points in the fourth quarter to lead Woodlawn to a 72-67 win over Goreville.

In a matchup of 618 1A heavyweights, neither team held more than a four point lead until late in the third quarter. That’s when the Blackcats scored seven straight to go up 49-41. Goreville had a chance to push the lead to double figures in the final seconds of the third, but McKay came up with a steal and layup to beat the buzzer and pull his club back within six.

That sequence kick started McKay’s fourth quarter outburst that was nothing short of spectacular. He hit four three-pointers and set up Chase Hollenkamp for another Cardinals’ three that temporarily put his team on top. After Briley Dunn tied it at 56 with a driving layup, McKay buried back to back threes to give the Cardinals the lead for good.

Hollenkamp finished with 16 for Woodlawn. Race Rynski added 12.

Dunn led four Blackcats in double figures with 14. Kanon Webb and Nick Compton scored 13 each, and Trent Glidwell chipped in ten.
