Harrisburg holds off Massac County in Vienna Regional semis

VIENNA — Survive and advance. It’s a popular mantra when it comes to the postseason. And that’s exactly what the Harrisburg Lady Bulldogs did, holding off Massac County 53-51 to advance the regional championship game.

Trailing 43-40 in the fourth, Harrisburg ripped off 12 straight points to lead 52-43 with 1:45 to play. Massac County came roaring back with eight points in 40 seconds, including back to back three-pointers from freshman Sophie Bormann to cut it to 52-51 with 1:05 to play.

The Lady Bulldogs struggled mightily from the free throw line down the stretch, leaving the door open for the Lady Patriots, but Massac County was unable to completely capitalize, missing multiple opportunities to tie or take the lead.

Lauren McDaniel led Harrisburg with 15 points. Essence Sanders added 12.

Massac’s Farrah Castleman hit five three-pointers and led all scorers with 20.

Harrisburg advances to Thursday night’s regional championship game at 7:00 against Anna-Jonesboro.
